Bring an Analog Source Into a Digital System

The MiniDSP PocketADC Audiophile Analog to Digital converter is a tiny, high-resolution ADC that takes a stereo RCA analog signal and outputs clean SPDIF coaxial and TOSLINK optical digital at the same time. It is the missing link when you want to feed an analog source into a digital DSP, DAC or streamer, with no computer in the chain.

Why You'll Love It

  • Small unit, serious converter. It fits in your palm at 13 x 40 x 62 mm but runs an ESS ES9821Q chipset with 118dB SNR and -114dB THD+N, so nothing is lost in the conversion.
  • Computer-less digitisation. RCA in, SPDIF and optical out, sample rate set with DIP switches on the unit. No drivers and no software to install.
  • Shares power with your Flex. The DC link cable lets a single 12V supply run both the PocketADC and a miniDSP Flex, so one plug powers the pair.

Under the Hood

  • ESS ES9821Q ADC. 24-bit conversion at 48, 96 or 192 kHz, selectable right on the unit.
  • Both outputs, always live. SPDIF coaxial on RCA and TOSLINK optical run at once, so you can feed two digital devices.
  • Measured to a high standard. 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.1 dB, 100 kΩ input impedance, 2 Vrms max input and -130 dB crosstalk.

CHT Insider Verdict

Most people buy the PocketADC to get an analog source into a miniDSP Flex or another digital-only device. It is the simplest way to add room correction or DSP to a turntable, tape deck or any line-level source, or to digitise analog for an all-digital system. For $129 the measured performance is well beyond what the size and price suggest.

Pro Tip: Pair it with a miniDSP Flex and use the link cable so one 12V supply powers both. That gets your analog source into the Flex for room correction without adding a computer or a second power point to the rack.
